TSHWANE BRT STATION, PRETORIA, COMPLETED 2015

(COURTESY OF MRA)

Tshwane (Pretoria) is one of the capital cities of South Africa. This project was awarded to the firm after a lengthy competition process. The bus station design concept is titled the “retro tram” being inspired by the electrical trams which were first introduced into the city in 1910. The station is essentially a single space covered by a curved roof (referencing the electrical tram roofs) and enclosed by a flush glazed facade system. it is designed to sit in the in the traffic median and allow the passengers to have an uninterrupted view of the city around them. One of the main driving factors in the design of these stations was to make it user friendly and accessible to all, with a specific emphasis on the usability for those with disability. The station finishes were selected to suite the historical context, urban environment and the natural colour pallet of the city of Pretoria. They evoke the imagery of the old tram lines realized in a contemporary and first world manner. the system is intended to make public transport easy, efficient and safe while also regenerating certain urban areas by bringing people back into the city.
